This ruler for paper piecing with the sewing machine adds a 1/4 inch seam allowance when cutting the fabric parts to size.
The paper is folded over (turned back) on the pattern line and fits under the ruler because it has a raised edge at the bottom of the long side. 
Tip: as an additional tool, use a piece of template plastic that is the same length as the ruler but slightly wider. This folds the paper more tightly and creates a firmer predisposition for cutting.
With the Add-A-Quarter ruler, paper piecing goes faster and the end result is beautiful. For rotary cutter use.
